RALEIGH, N.C.-- NC State came up short against the top-ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State on Friday, falling on the road 35-3.
The Wolfpack falls to 4-6 overall, while the Cowboys improve to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12.
Freshman 125-pounder Coltin Fought took the mat first for the Wolfpack against No. 10 Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State. At the end of the first period the score was tied 0-0. Morrison got on the board first in the second period registering an escape, but Fought responded with a takedown just before the end of the period to take the lead 2-1. The bout was tied at the end of the regulation 3-3, and had to be decided in overtime where Morrison was able to defeat Fought by sudden victory 5-3.
Redshirt-senior Darrius Little, ranked No. 12 nationally, continued his standout wrestling for the Wolfpack as he defeated No. 14 Josh Kindig by decision 5-3. Little wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as he registered a takedown in the first 30 seconds of the bout. Little led the match 5-2 after the second period, but Kindig was able to tighten the score when he opened the third period with an escape. Little is now 28-9 on the season and has won nine matches in a row and 15 of his last 16. He now is 92-54 for his career, which ties him with Jim Zenz (1977-80) and Tab Thacker (1981-85) for fifth in school history for career victories.
Sophomore 149-pounder Matt Nereim followed Little to the mat and took on No. 2-ranked Jamal Parks. Nereim kept the bout close scoring two escapes in the first period before getting a reversal in the third period to bring the score to 5-4. Parks registered an escape later in the third period and hung on for the win 6-4. At 157, Colton Palmer was defeated by No. 12 Albert White of the Cowboys, 7-5.
The Cowboys won the next three bouts at 165, 174, and 184 getting major decisions from Dallas Bailey, No. 4-ranked Chris Perry, and Chris McNeill over Nijel Jones, Quinton Godley, and Robert O’Neill, respectively.
At 197, KaRonne Jones was decisioned by No. 10 Blake Rosholt in a tight battle, 1-0. Rosholt got an escape in the second period and that would be the only score in the bout. Oklahoma State finished the night with a technical fall from third-ranked Alan Gelogaev at heavyweight against Josh Davis to round out the scoring for the night.
NC State will return to action on Friday, February 3, at 7 p.m. against North Carolina. It will be senior night for the Wolfpack.
