RALEIGH, N.C. — Former NC State catcher Pratt Maynard and current Wolfpack lefthander/first baseman Carlos Rodon were two of the honorees at the 62nd annual Raleigh Hot Stove League Banquet, held Tuesday night at the McKimmon Center.
The Hot Stove League honored Maynard as the North Carolina College Player of the Year. The former Wolfpack catcher earned first-team All-ACC honors after batting .323 with 21 doubles, five home runs and 41 RBIs for NC State in 2011. Maynard had a .474 slugging percentage and a .414 on-base percentage. He led the Wolfpack in batting, doubles, runs scored (46), walks (38) and slugging percentage. During the course of the season he had a team-best 12-game hitting streak from March 19 through April 5 and batted .386 during the streak. Maynard also had a nine-game hitting streak and two seven-game streaks.
The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Maynard in the third round of the 2011 June Draft, the 103rd player taken overall, and assigned him to their Ogden affiliate in the Rookie-level Pioneer League. Maynard batted .239 with a pair of homers and 11 RBIs in 25 games for Ogden, then was sent to the Arizona Instructional League, where he gained further seasoning. Maynard could begin the 2012 season with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the High-A California League.
Rodon won his second consecutive Catfish Hunter Award as the high school player of the year in Wake County. Rodon was the 2011 North Carolina 4-A Player of the Year after going 11-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 135 strikeouts for state 4-A champion Holly Springs High School. Rodon also batted .370, hit three home runs and drove in 25 runs. Baseball America named him a third-team high school All-American. He was named all-state and Tri-9 Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row. His three-year career record at Holly Springs was a sterling 23-2.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Rodon in the 16th round of the 2011 draft, and negotiations went to the midnight hour at the Aug. 17 deadline before Rodon opted to attend NC State. He will compete for playing time as both a pitcher and a position player for the Wolfpack in 2012.
