Women's Tennis Defeats No. 67 Winthrop

RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 34 Wolfpack women's tennis team won its second match of the day on Saturday evening, defeating No. 67 Winthrop. NC State won two of the three doubles matches, and picked up five singles wins to defeat the Eagles 6-1.
NC State won the doubles point, thanks to a thrilling game from Sophie Nelson and Christy Sipes. After Ashley Miller and Joelle Kissell teamed up to defeat Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portiolli, 8-4, Elisha Hande and Tatiana Illova were topped by Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia.
Once those two matches had concluded, Nelson and Sipes were locked in a 7-7 battle on court 3. The duo rallied to win the contest 9-7, earning the doubles point for the Pack.
In singles action, Kissell, who is currently ranked 40th in the nation, beat Yasmine Alkeme 6-2, 6-1. Illova, playing in the second position for the Pack, topped Andressa Garcia 6-2, 6-1, while Miller defeated Sandra Herrera in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot.
In the No. 4 spot, Hande topped Giovanna Portiolli, 6-0, 7-6, and Sipes defeated Monica Aguado, 6-1, 7-6 in the fifth position. Erin Gunaysu picked up the only singles win for the Eagles, defeating Chloe Smith 6-2, 6-2, in No. 6.
Sophie Nelson, playing in an exhibition match against Camille Amrani, won the first set 6-2, and was up 4-1 in the second set.
The Wolfpack will return to action Friday, Jan. 27 with a 10 a.m. match against Tulsa in Knoxville, Tenn.
