RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State swept three straight sets from Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum for its third consecutive victory in the Courtyard Midtown Classic.
After an emotionally draining five-set victory over Wisconsin Friday night, the Wolfpack (5-1) built an early advantage against the Catamounts and held on for its fifth consecutive victory on the young season.
Second-year head coach Bryan Bunn was pleased with the effort and the outcome, even if his didn’t play as sharply in the second half of the match as it did at the start.
“You play a tough five-game match against a Big Ten opponent, you want to see how you respond the next day,” Bunn said. “We started off great, but let up a little after we got control of the game.
“We let up on our intensity a little bit, but we held on and played well enough to win. And a win is always better than a loss.”
Senior outside hitter Luciana Shafer led the Wolfpack in scoring, with 11 kills among her 12.5 points. Freshman Nicole Glass also had 11 kills. Overall, the Wolfpack had a .408 attack percentage in the match.
Junior Megan Cyr had 40 of the team’s 46 assists and freshman Alexa Micek had a pair of service aces to go along with her 11 digs. Senior Kelly Wood led the team with 13 digs.
The Wolfpack plays again Saturday night against Campbell in the final match of the two-day tournament.
“We’re looking forward to the match against Campbell,” Bunn said. “They have beaten us the last two years, so I think our team is fired up to play them.”
