COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After setting the school record with 13 straight victories, NC State’s volleyball team was unable to extend its streak Sunday afternoon at Maryland, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Terps in the Comcast Center.
Maryland jumped out to an early lead against a Wolfpack team that had won 30 of its last 31 sets and had lost only six games all season. The Terps held on for a pair of 25-18 victories, then finished off the match, 25-21.
“We just didn’t play very well,” said second-year head coach Bryan Bunn. “We came out tight and we played with fear, and that’s something you can’t do in a conference match.
“It’s something we have to get over.”
Freshman Dariyan Hopper led Wolfpack (13-2 overall, 1-1 ACC) with eight kills, while senior Margaret Salata had a team-high 8.5 points. As a team, however, the Wolfpack had an attack average of .155 for the match.
Senior librero Kelly Wood led the squad with 14 digs, while junior setter Megan Cyr had 25 of the team’s 30 assists.
“The third game we played with the kind of energy that I like to see,” Bunn said. “It was back and forth through most of the match, then they made a little run and we didn’t respond.
“We have to do a better job with that.”
The Wolfpack travels to Atlanta on Friday for a 7 p.m. match against Georgia Tech.
“The thing now will be to see how we respond to this loss,” Bunn said. “It’s a teaching moment for us, which is what you have to do after a loss. We have to learn from it and be better prepared.”
