Makinde's Corner Edges No. 9 SMU

DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Gbenga Makinde's overtime goal propelled NC State to a 1-0 victory over ninth-ranked SMU at the Duke/Nike Classic Friday.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Fabian Otte notched the shutout with eight saves over 98 minutes of action, extending the team's streak of holding opponents scoreless to 478 minutes dating back to the start of the season.
SMU entered the game ranked ninth on CollegeSoccerNews.com and No. 17 in the NSCAA poll. The loss drops the Mustangs to 0-2 on the year.
The Pack improves to 2-0-1 on the season, head coach Kelly Findley's first at the helm.
Makinde sailed a corner kick directly into the goal to after 98 scoreless minutes to edge the Mustangs, and take over as the Pack's leading scorer through three games.
For the first time since 1987, the Pack has opened the season with three consecutive shutouts.
NC State returns to action on Sunday, September 4 at noon as the Pack squares off against No. 8 UC Santa Barbara to wrap up the Duke/Nike Classic.
