RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State closed out non-conference play with a 3-1 victory over Towson Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Field.
The Wolfpack improves to 8-2 on the year, while Towson moves to 5-3.
The Tigers smelled an upset with an early goal at the 4:45 mark by Amanda Novy. She collected a pass from Kaitlin Brooks and promptly placed her shot into the lower-left corner past the outstretched arms of Wolfpack keeper Kim Kern.
NC State erased those early upset thoughts with two goals in a span of 2:41 that put the home team up for good, 2-1 Kristina Argiroff's header off a corner kick from Shelli Spamer got State going at the 10:18 mark.
Minutes later a Towson player was whistled for a hand ball in the box that resulted in another penalty kick this season for senior back Alex Berger. She converted her fourth PK in as many tries to give her club a 2-1 lead with 12:59 to play.
NC State dominated just about every statistical category in the match, including 28 shots to Towson's eight. The Pack also had seven corner kicks, but could not muster that third goal until the final minute.
Argiroff's cross bounced off a defender and freshman Stephanie Bronson pounced on the loose ball and buried her team-tying fifth goal of the season at the 89:35 mark.
The Raleigh native has four goals in the last three games.
Towson keeper Jocelyn Papciak made 13 saves, while Kern had four to her credit in 90 minutes of action.
The game could have very easily become a blowout with the Wolfpack putting pressure on the Tiger defense all afternoon long. Senior Tanya Cain hit the cross bar twice, and she combined with Bronson for 17 shots.
NC State moves back to ACC play to host Wake Forest on Thursday at 7 p.m.
