Kissell Defeats No. 18 Hardenbergh at UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Led by sophomore Joelle Kissell, the NC State women’s tennis team opened the 2011-12 season at the University of Virginia Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Friday.
Kissell started the day off strong by defeating Ana Bara of Virginia Commonwealth 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. She then went on to defeat No. 18 Lindsey Hardenbergh of the University of Virginia 6-2, 6-4. Hardenbergh is ranked 18th in the nation and was the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
“Joelle’s win is a really strong one, it was a huge upset for her,” said head coach Hans Olsen.
The Pack also got a strong showing from the doubles team of junior Tatiana Illova and freshman Elisha Hande. Playing in their first doubles match together, Illova and Hande defeated the No. 36-ranked team in the nation from Marshall.
In addition to her doubles victory, Hande also won two singles matches, defeating Ellie Ball of Marshall 6-0, 6-0, and Olga Terteac of VCU 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Sophomore Christy Sipes and senior Ashley Miller each picked up wins of their own in singles action. Sipes defeated Maria Voscekova of Marshall 6-2, 6-1, while Miller knocked off Juliana Pires of Old Dominion 7-5, 6-3.
