CHARLESTON, S.C. - NC State women's golf opened with a strong performance at the Cougar Classic Sunday at the par 72, 6,205 yard Yeamans Hall Club, finishing the day tied for fourth among the nation's best.
The 57th-ranked Wolfpack holds leads over top-20 opponents Duke, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Georgia, and sits tied with #3 Alabama. The Pack also bettered ACC opponents Maryland and Miami.
"I thought the girls really played well," said NC State head coach Page Marsh. "They had fun competing out there today, and we'll try to keep that going as we take it one shot at a time tomorrow."
As expected, newcomers Vivian Tsui and Augusta James turned in strong performances, finishing the day 13th and 25th, repectively. Tsui led the way among the freshmen, carding a 71, while James managed a 73.
Sophomore Ana Menendez outshined her teammates, though, leading the Pack with her 1-under par 70 to earn a share of 10th.
Junior Amanda Baker rounded out the team's 287 (-1) with a 1-over par 73, good for a share of 25th. Brittany Marchand fired a 75 on day one to settle into 71st place.
On Monday, the Pack returns to action for round two of the Cougar Classic, teeing off at 8:45 a.m. Live stats for the event are available at Golfstat.com.
