RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's golf added two assistant coaches Tuesday, bringing in former Southern Methodist head coach Todd Selders as an assistant, and former North Carolina head coach Sally Austin in a volunteer assistant capacity.
The pair brings a combined 23 years of head coaching experience to the Pack staff, a proposition that thrills head coach Page Marsh.
"We're excited," said Marsh. "I'm excited to have them join our program and bring a wealth of golf knowledge and experience to help our team achieve winning ACC and NCAA Championships. What excites me for our team and program is that we have such a balanced coaching staff. Our players can turn to any of us and our resources and gain valuable information from our various backgrounds."
Todd Selders joins the Wolfpack staff after spending one year assisting the men's golf team at Coastal Carolina, and seven years as head women's golf coach at Southern Methodist.
In 2005-06, Selders earned Conference USA Coach of the Year honors, marking his second time earning the accolade. Five SMU golfers were named All-Conference and the Mustangs took second at the C-USA Championships. SMU narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a team, finishing 12th at the NCAA Central Regionals.
The 2004-05 season saw the Mustangs take home team titles in two tournaments and post four more top-three finishes. SMU just missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Tournament as a team, finishing 11th at the Central Regionals. Jennifer Ackerson and Laura Cross were both named first-team all-conference, marking the first time since 1990 that SMU had multiple all-conference performers.
Sally Austin comes to NC State after compiling nearly 16 years of head coaching experience at North Carolina.
In Austin's 15 seasons as head coach, North Carolina finished in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships six times.
The Tar Heels won six tournament titles, and six players captured 13 individual championships with Austin at the helm. Players under Austin earned seven All-American and 16 All-ACC mentions. Under Austin's guidance, Marcy Newton was selected ACC Rookie of the Year in 1996-97 and was named to the 1999 Golfweek Sagarin Mid Atlantic/East District First Team.
Austin was named LPGA Coach of the Year in 2004. In 1999, she was named the LPGA SE Section Coach of the Year.
"When I introduced them to the team, it was thrilling for me," said Marsh. "Being out there at practice and seeing how easily we all stepped into the role of helping our student athletes, I'm really excited about the year. Today, the team presented their team goals and their goals for each other. It's definitely a `We' thing and it's fantastic."
