Raleigh, N.C. - The Department of Athletics kicked off the 2011-12 sports year in a unique way on Wednesday afternoon, as coaches and student-athletes from a variety of programs gathered at an iconic landmark on campus to show a bit of their artistic side and get students excited about State athletics. The Wolfpack group painted the free expression tunnel with "Wolfpack Unlimited" and "STATE" logos, while others took cans of spray paint and free-styled.
Students passing through the tunnel did a double-take as they saw women's basketball coach Kellie Harper helping her players paint an actual court and men's coach Mark Gottfried rendering a ball spinning on a finger. Tom O'Brien and Director of Athletics Debbie Yow also got a little red paint on their hands. Jon Choboy from men's tennis, Kelly Findley from men's soccer and swimming and diving coach Braden Holloway were also on hand to greet students.
"This was a great way to get out and say `hello' to students on campus," said O'Brien. "I was surprised at the volume of students that passed through that area in the short time while we were there. Audie Cole looked a little too comfortable with that can of spray paint, so we might need to address that later."
Department representatives were on hand to give out "Wolfpack Unlimited" t-shirts, bags, posters and schedule cards, as well as provide information on student-ticketing procedures.
