RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State was one of three ACC schools and one of 92 women’s college teams across the country to be honored by the America Volleyball Coaches Association on its record-breaking Team Academic Awards for the 2010-11 season.
A total of 481 men’s and women’s college and high school teams were recognized by the organization, including ACC members NC State, Miami and Duke. That’s the most ever, since the award was instituted for the 1992-93 academic year.
Each of the recognized teams had cumulative grade-point averages exceeding 3.30 on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 on a 5.0 scale. NC State’s cumulative GPA for the 2010-11 school year was 3.39, which ranks third among the school’s 23 varsity sports.
In earning the honor, the Wolfpack ranks among the top 20 percent of all Division I women’s volleyball programs.
“We're extremely pleased with the performance our team had in the classroom during the most recent academic year,” said NC State coach Bryan Bunn, who is entering his second season as head coach of the Wolfpack. “We make a lot of time demands on our players when it comes to practice, preparation and competition.
“But we're just as demanding in the classroom, and I'm pleased to see our players are living up to those expectations.”
The Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 170% increase over the span of the decade.
"Congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the 2011 AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director, Kathy DeBoer. "Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court.
"The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as court success. All involved should celebrate this award."
