RALEIGH, N.C. — Ryan Mathews’ big summer continued this week when he was selected to play in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game, which will be held Monday, July 18, at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville.
Mathews, a rising senior outfielder playing for the Wilson Tobs, exploded onto the CPL scene earlier this summer with a torrid 13-game hitting streak, during which he batted .408 (20-for-49) with five doubles, nine home runs, 19 runs scored, 20 RBIs and three steals.
Although Mathews has cooled off since his hitting streak was snapped July 6 at Morehead City, he was batting an even .300 for the summer through games of July 13. He had nine doubles, 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and eight steals in nine attempts. He led the CPL in home runs, was sixth in RBIs, and third in total bases with 80. He had a .667 slugging percentage and a .356 on-base percentage.
Mathews will participate in the CPL All-Star Home-Run Derby on Sunday at Riddle Stadium
Head coaches and team media representatives from all 15 CPL teams choose the league’s two all-star teams, with 27 players on each roster. The National team features players from 10 of the 15 CPL clubs, while the American team features players from 12 CPL clubs. Mathews, selected to the National team, is the only NC State player to make either roster, and one of just three Atlantic Coast Conference players selected as CPL all-stars.
Elsewhere In The CPL
Wolfpack catcher Danny Canela returned to the Forest City Owls on June 21 and, after a sluggish start, has heated up at the plate. In Forest City victories over Gastonia on Tuesday and Wednesday, Canela went 5-for-9 with three doubles and three RBIs, lifting his season average to .262 with five doubles, a home run and 12 RBIs in 16 games. A rising junior for NC State, Canela has split time between third base, catcher and designated hitter for the Owls.
Rising junior righthander Danny Healey started the Tuesday game at Gastonia and continued his strong work this summer, allowing two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two. Healey has made three starts for Forest City this summer and was the winning pitcher in all three. He is 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA and has held opposing hitters to a .200 batting average.
On The Cape
Rising junior righthander Chris Overman continues to dazzle Cape Cod League hitters. Pitching for the Harwich Mariners, Overman made back-to-back appearances vs. the Chatham Anglers earlier this week. He retired all three men he faced July 10 in a 7-5 victory, and then set down four straight Anglers the next night in a 7-5 loss.
Though games of July 13, Overman had made 11 appearances and had yet to allow a run. In 15 2/3 innings, he’d yielded five hits, struck out 15 and walked three. He was 2-0 with a save.
Elsewhere on the Cape, rising junior righthander Josh Easley suffered his first loss of the season on July 10 at Brewster. Working out of the bullpen for the Falmouth Commodores, Easley had notched saves in each of his previous three appearances, but allowed the game-winning run in the ninth inning against the Whitecaps. The loss dropped Easley to 1-1 with three saves and a 2.16 ERA. The run broke a streak of five shutout appearances for Easley.
Rising senior outfielder John Gianis, drafted in the 26th round by the Los Angeles Angels, reported to the Chatham Anglers on July 6.
