DES MOINES, Iowa – NC State sophomore Andie Cozzarelli of Apex, N.C., earned second-team All-America honors Wednesday night in the finals of the 10,000-meter race at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
Cozzarelli, running in the final event of the first day of the four-day meet, finished 13th overall with a time of 35:22.69.
Earlier in the evening, true freshman Kenyetta Iyevbele of Charlotte smashed the school record in the women’s 800-meter semifinals, advancing to Friday’s finals in the event.
Iyevbele’s time of 2:04.63 is more than a full second faster than the old school mark of 2:05.78, set by Angelina Blackmon in 2009. Overall, her time was the eighth fastest in the semifinals. The finals are set for Friday at 8:10 p.m. (EST) at Drake Stadium.
The women’s 800 had three heats, with the top two times in each heat, plus the two next fastest times, advancing to the finals. Iyevbele was fourth in her heat, but she and LSU’s Charlene Lipsey were fast enough to make the final field of eight runners.
“She did exactly what she was supposed to do,” said assistant women’s track coach and women’s head cross country coach Laurie Henes. “She drew a very fast heat, with most of the same people she had in her race at the regional race two weekends ago.
“They ran a fast and even race, and she stayed with them. She knew she had to be at least in the top four in her heat, and she finished strong over the last 100 yards.”
Friday’s final can be seen on the CBS Sports Network from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (EST) and also on the NCAA’s Live Events online service via this link.
Sophomore T.J. Graham, who qualified for the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships, ran a 100-meter time of 10.49, but did not qualify for Friday’s finals in the event. He finished 17th overall.
Cozzarelli, who is also a member of the NC State women’s cross country team with Iyevbele, capped off a successful outdoor track campaign, in which she earned All-ACC honors in the 10,000 meters with a second-place finish.
The Wolfpack will also have two more competitors on Saturday, when sophomore Ryan Hill and redshirt freshman Andrew Colley both run in the 5,000-meter race. Hill, who broke his own school record in the 5,000 meters earlier this season, won All-America honors as a redshirt freshman last year by finishing seventh at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
