RALEIGH, N.C. -- Former NC State men's golfer Marc Turnesa takes his first crack at a U.S. Open on June 16-19 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
Turnesa is part of the first pairing off No. 10 tee Thursday morning with a pair of Texans in Chad Campbell and last week's PGA TOUR winner Harrison Frazar. Turnesa advanced to the Open through sectional qualifying in Columbus, Ohio last week.
Former Wolfpacker and 2010 Players Champion Tim Clark withdrew from the U.S. Open on Monday because of a right elbow injury. The South African has been nagged by tendinitis most of the season although he finished second in January's Sony Open in Hawaii.
Congressional Country Club's Blue Course will be set up at 7,574 yards and will play to a par 71 (36-35). This layout is the second-longest in U.S. Open history behind the 7,643-yard South Course at Torrey Pines Golf Course in 2008.
The starting field of 156 golfers will be cut after 36 holes to the low 60 scorers (and ties) and any player within 10 strokes of the leader.
In other news regarding former NC State standouts, Carl Pettersson notched his third top 10 of the 2011 PGA TOUR season with a tie for eighth at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last weekend in Memphis, Tenn. He ranks 62nd in FedExCup standings.
Meanwhile, Garth Mulroy sits seventh among money leaders on the Nationwide Tour. He won the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation in May for his first victory since 2009.
