AWENDAW, S.C. - Mitchell Sutton won his first college tournament in dramatic fashion and No. 19 NC State placed in a tie for fifth at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at the par 71, 7,298-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club.
Sutton, from London, Ontario, notched the win with a par on the first sudden-death playoff hole to defeat Andrew Loupe of LSU. He closed with a 3-under 68 today to finish at 6-under 207. He tied for the lead after day one with a 4-under 67 and shot a 1-over 72 on Monday.
The Wolfpack recorded its best team score of the tournament with a 1-under 283 on Tuesday to finish at 4-over 856 over 54 holes and three days of competition.
Sutton's previous best finish was a pair of fifth-place ties, including one this fall at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke. He also broke his best collegiate 54-hole score by four strokes.
Freshman Albin Choi shot a 1-over 72 during his final round to finish tied for 11th at even-par 213 for the tournament.
Junior Chad Day fired a second-consecutive 2-over 73 on Tuesday to finish tied for 31st at 4-over 217.
Senior Brandon Detweiler posted his best round of the tournament with a 1-under 70 that allowed him to move up 14 spots to finish tied for 41st at 7-over 220.
Junior Mark McMillen finished tied for 60th at 16-over 229. He finished Tuesday's final round at 5-over 76.
NC State tied in the standings with No. 11 Texas A&M and No. 25 Wake Forest, and also defeated No. 4 Florida by 13 strokes and No. 17 Virginia by 21 shots.
No. 9 LSU won the team title at 3-under 849 by one stroke over No. 13 Augusta State.
The Wolfpack will compete in the ECU/UNCW Invitational on April 8-9 at River Landing Country Club in Wallace, N.C.
