WASHINGTON, D.C. --- 25th-ranked NC State placed five gymnasts on EAGL all-conference teams, and senior Brittany Vontz took home EAGL Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors Friday at the league’s year end banquet.
Vontz was named the EAGL Scholar-Athlete, the third Wolfpack gymnast to earn the honor, the first since Ashley Shepard in 2009.
A biological sciences major, Vontz ranks in the Top 10 at NCSU and was awarded an ACC postgraduate scholarship. A proven talent on bars and the 2009 EAGL co-champion, she has been accepted to the physical therapy program at the University of St. Louis.
Brooke Barr, Jess Panza, and Stephanie Ouellette landed on the All-EAGL first team. Panza led the way with three mentions and the team MVP award, capturing the honor on bars, floor, and beam. Oullette earned recognition for floor and all-around, while Barr secured a mention for vault.
Barr’s first team selection marks the fourth of her career. Panza returns to the first team for the third time in her career.
Diahanna Ham and Hannah Fallanca each scored one mention for the All-EAGL second team, Ham for vault and Fallanca for beam.
NC State had 11 gymnasts honored with EAGL Academic awards, including Barr, Fallanca, Panza, and Vontz. Additionally, Emily Anderson, Amy DePasquale, Rachel Fincham, Kristen Harabedian, Brittney Hardiman, Ellen Marion, and Taylor Seaman.
Bar, Fincham, Ham, and Panza were recognized for their four EAGL weekly awards captured during the season.
The awards banquet took place on the eve of the 2011 EAGL Championships which take place on the campus of George Washington on Saturday at 2 p.m.
