RALEIGH, N.C. --- 42nd-ranked NC State tennis shut out College of Charleston, 7-0, to improve to 3-1 on the spring Sunday at the Isenhour Tennis Center.
“I thought the girls had a really decisive mindset today,” said NC State head coach Hans Olsen. “They were very sharp when they needed to be. It was a test of their mental toughness to win all of the sets that we played today.”
The Pack’s seventh-ranked duo of Sanaa Bhambri and Sandhya Nagaraj made short work of College of Charleston’s top doubles team, Hayman/Viana with an 8-1 victory to open the afternoon.
Lenka Hojckova and Tatiana Illova teamed to knock off Christin Newman and Kelly Kambourelis 8-3.
Joelle Kissell and Chloe Smith scored a victory over Charleston’s Lee/Casey tandem to complete the sweep.
In singles play, 32nd-ranked Bhambri had no trouble with Christin Newman, dispatching the Cougar’s number one player in straight-sets 6-0, 6-1.
Kissell kept her undefeated singles streak alive, defeating Kinsey Carter 6-0, 6-3 for her fourth-straight win of the spring season.
Hojckova managed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emma Hayman. Illova dropped Caroline Newman 6-3, 6-0.
Christy Sipes outlasted Kambourelis 7-5, 6-1, picking up a victory in the closest set of the day.
Chloe Smith won in her first singles appearance of the spring, a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Keely Mulligan.
“College of Charleston knows how to compete,” said Olsen, “but I think we’re improving in the areas of fitness and match toughness. That came through today.”
The 7-0 victory marks the third time this spring that the Wolfpack has shut out an opponent, adding to shutout wins over Charleston Southern and Auburn.
NC State returns to the courts Saturday, February 19 against BYU in Minneapolis, Minn.
