ELON, N.C. – Three three-run innings Saturday sent Elon to a 12-2 victory over NC State in the middle game of a three-game season-opening weekend college baseball series.
Saturday’s game was held at Latham Field in Elon. The first game of the three-game set was held at Doak Field at Dail Park on Friday and the finale will be at the Doak on Sunday.
NC State (1-1) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with a pair of solo homers. Danny Canela tied the game with an opposite-field shot to left-center. Two outs later, Chris Diaz went deep down the left-field line, and the Wolfpack took the lead at 2-1.
The lead was short-lived, however. Elon (1-1) answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Harry Austin lined a two-out single to right to knot the score at 2-2, and Elon regained the lead when NC State starter Josh Easley balked home Cyle Rasmus from third base. Austin moved to second base on the balk, then came around to score on an RBI single by Jake Luce.
Ryan Kinsella broke the game open with a three-run blast in the fifth to give Elon a 6-2 advantage.
Elon starter Kyle Webb was in full control for most of the game, allowing just five hits over six innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters and walked just two.
Reliever Dylan Clark worked the final three innings to earn the save. He allowed just one hit and struck out four.
Wolfpack starter Josh Easley, a transfer from Weatherford (Texas) College, took the mound for the first time in a Wolfpack uniform. He allowed just one run over the first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth and fifth, and allowed seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out four.
Pratt Maynard and Diaz each went 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Diaz is 6-for-8 through the first two games this season.
Kinsella and Niko Fraser each had two hits and drove in four runs to pace Elon. The Phoenix scored two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to wrap up the scoring.
The Wolfpack had opportunities in each of the first three innings, but stranded runners in scoring position in each frame.
The final game of this three-game set takes place Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park at 1 p.m.
