RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men’s soccer player Lucas Carpenter, gymnast Brittany Vontz and women’s basketball player Brittany Strachan are among the 41 ACC student-athletes to be honored with prestigious postgraduate scholarship awards, the league announced Friday.
A total of 36 recipients (three from each school) were selected for Weaver-James-Corrigan Awards, given to student-athletes continuing their education after their playing careersl. Five honorary awards were given to student-athletes who plan to enter a professional career in their chosen sport.
Carpenter, an outside defender, was a four-year starter for the Wolfpack soccer team whose career ended last fall. The native of Apex, N.C., started 62 games for the Wolfpack, though his career was cut short last fall with a knee injury. He will graduate in May with a degree in sport management.
Vontz, a three-time All-EAGL selection on bars, is a senior from Lincoln, Neb., who is well-decorated in the gym and in the classroom. The biological sciences major is also a three-time EAGL All-Academic team member, who earned earned Scholastic All-American honors by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches in 2008. Vontz has also appeared on the ACC Honor Roll three times.
Strachan is a senior forward for the Wolfpack women’s basketball team, who has been a key player off the bench her entire career. The native of Kernersville, N.C., is majoring in computer science and is a three-time selection to the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
Since 1997, NC State has produced more postgraduate award and honorary award winners than any other school in the ACC, a total of 51 including this year’s trio.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of the late Jim Weaver and Bob James, as well as Gene Corrigan, all of whom are former ACC commissioners. The league’s first commissioner, James H. Weaver, served the conference from 1954-70 after a stint as the director of athletics at Wake Forest. His early leadership and uncompromising integrity are largely responsible for the excellent reputation enjoyed by the ACC today.
Robert C. James, a former Maryland football player, was named commissioner in 1971 and served in that capacity for 16 years. During his tenure, the league continued to grow in stature and became recognized as a national leader in athletics and academics, winning 23 national championships and maintaining standards of excellence in the classroom.
Eugene F. Corrigan assumed his role as the third full-time commissioner of Sept., 1987, and served until August 1997. During Corrigan’s tenure, ACC schools captured 30 NCAA championships and two national football titles.
Prior to 1994, the Weaver-James postgraduate scholarships were given as separate honors. The Jim Weaver Award, which originated in 1970, recognized exceptional achievement on the playing field and in the classroom, while the Bob James Award, established in 1987, also honored outstanding student-athletes.
The 41 selected student-athletes will be honored on April 13 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, N.C., at a luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club.
