CLEARWATER, Fla. - NC State moved to 2-0 tonight after defeating Long Island 7-5 in the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament in Clearwater, Fla.
Morgan Peeler earned the win for the Wolfpack, giving up five runs on six hits in the complete game effort. Alyssa Allbritten paced the Pack at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Alyssa Ishibashi led off the game with a walk, then advanced on two passed balls before coming around to score on a Long Island error, which allowed Allbritten to reach base. Caitlin Dent then ripped a single, scoring Allbritten to give the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Junior pitcher Peeler sat down 11-straight Long Island batters before allowing a single in the third inning.
The Pack struck again in the bottom of the third inning. Toni Ann Williford drew a leadoff walk to begin the frame, and advanced to third off of an Allbritten single. Bridget Desbois, fresh off of a 4-for-4 outing earlier, then earned another base hit, driving in Williford and Allbritten, moving her RBI total to five for the day.
Peeler surrendered her first run of the evening in the fifth inning when Long Island designated hitter Emily Kakuska hit a solo homerun, her first of the season. She bounced back, though, retiring the next three batters to maintain the Pack's 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, NC State got back the run given up in the top half of the frame. Allbritten led off with a single, then was moved to third by back-to-back groundouts by Chelsea Tate and Dent. Bethaney Wells then lined a shot to third base, scoring Allbritten and earning a single, pushing the Wolfpack lead to 5-1.
Long Island put together a good offensive inning in the sixth, scoring one run thanks to a Sterling Hoham triple, which cut the NC State lead to 5-2.
The Pack responded again, though, putting up two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 7-2.
Long Island rallied in the top of the seventh, posting three runs to make the score 7-5. In the end, though, the Pack prevailed, earning the victory.
NC State returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against No. 5 Florida in Clearwater, Fla. Continue to follow Wolfpack softball on Twitter throughout the tournament, as there have been GameTracker issues in the stadium.
