TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – NC State’s volleyball team fell 3-0 to No. 18 Florida State on Friday evening in Tully Gym, as the Seminoles (19-4 overall, 13-0 ACC) maintain their hold on first place in the ACC standings.
The two teams were evenly matched in the first two sets, with Florida State winning seven consecutive points at the end of the opener to take a 25-18 win. The teams were tied late in the second frame, until the Seminoles pulled out a 25-21 win.
“We had our chances,” said second-year head coach Bryan Bunn. “We made some good runs at them. In the first set, we were tied 18-18, and they got going a little bit.
“We just didn’t have it tonight.”
Florida State, which is one win away from going undefeated at home for the first time since joining the ACC in 1991, cruised to a 25-15 win in the third and final set.
“There is a reason they are ranked No. 18 in the country and in first place in our league,” Bunn said. “They have a good team and they played well tonight.
“We were right there on the edge with them, but couldn’t quite get over it.”
For the Wolfpack (17-10, 5-9), senior Margaret Salata led the way with 10 kills, a .320 hitting average, five total blocks and 13.5 points. Junior Megan Cyr had a team-high 27 assists and senior Kelly Wood had 17 digs.
Florida State’s Jekaterina Stepanova had 12 kills, 13 points and a .233 hitting average to lead the Seminoles.
The Wolfpack continues its southern road swing on Sunday, as it travels to Miami to face the third-place Hurricanes. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
“We have to play a little greedier against Miami than we did tonight,” Bunn said. “We have to take advantage of the chances we have and we can’t play with any fear, something we didn’t do tonight.”
