FARMVILLE, Va. – The NC State women’s soccer team earned a smooth-sailing 4-1 victory at Longwood in non-conference action Friday night.
The Wolfpack improved to 9-4-2 on the season, while Longwood fell to 4-6-3.
The visitors wasted no time in gaining an early lead after freshman Shelli Spamer scored her first goal of the season just 64 seconds into the match. She cleaned up a loose ball in front of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
Later in the first half the lead doubled to 2-0 when the Wolfpack got an own goal when a Longwood defender deflected the ball into its own net at the 33:34 mark.
The Lancers seemed poised to make a game of it when they scored at the 56:03 mark to make it 2-1. Kelsey Pardue scored after the initial shot hit off the post.
NC State senior Kristina Argiroff dismissed any further notion of an upset when she scored her fourth goal of the season just 1:35 later and it was 3-1 Wolfpack.
Classmate Tanya Cain found the back of the net just over two minutes later with her fifth of 2011 and it ended with NC State notching win No. 9 on the season with a 4-1 victory.
The Wolfpack hosts Virginia on Thursday at 7 p.m.
