NEWTON, Mass. – Despite eight saves from keeper Kim Kern, the NC State women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to No. 13 Boston College Sunday afternoon at Newton Soccer Field.
Stephanie Wirth had the match’s only goal in the 14th minute to lift Boston College to an overall record of 10-4-2, 5-4 in the ACC, while NC State drops to 10-7-2, 1-6-2 in the league.
Even with the loss, the Wolfpack is guaranteed a winning record for the first time in three seasons under head coach Steve Springthorpe.
Kern, a senior from Raleigh, did as best she could to keep State in the match all afternoon long.
She made a great stop on a shot from Rachel Davitt from four yards out at 10:58 in the first half.
Kern also saved a second-half penalty kick from Victoria Dimartino.
BC held a 15-9 shot advantage. Senior Tanya Cain, who scored Thursday’s game winner for the Pack in overtime against Clemson, forced Eagles keeper Jillian Mastroianni to make a pair of saves, including one in the late stages of the game.
The eight stops by Kern gives her an ACC-leading total of 92 - the 10th most for one season in school history.
NC State will finish its season on Thursday against Duke at Dail Soccer Field beginning at 7 p.m. A ceremony will be held prior to kick off to honor the programs six seniors.
