Track & Field Finalizes 2012 Schedule

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 2012 NC State indoor and outdoor track and field schedule, which was announced Wednesday by veteran Wolfpack head coach Rollie Geiger, will include a competitive slate of regional and national meets, culminating with the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor championships.
The Pack – which returns All-Americans Ryan Hill, T.J. Graham, Kenyetta Iyevbele and Andie Cozzarelli for the coming season – opens its indoor season at the Christopher Newport Invitational on Dec. 4 in Newport News, Va. The outdoor season begins March 16-17 in Charlotte.
The Wolfpack will participate in a variety of indoor meets, locally and nationally, leading up to the ACC championships, which will be hosted by Boston College on Feb. 23-25 in Boston, and the NCAA championships, which will be hosted by Boise State on March 9-10 in Nampa, Idaho.
The outdoor season features two home meets at NC State’s newly refurbished Derr Track.
The annual Raleigh Relays, featuring some 2,000 high school and college athletes, will be held on March 30-31. The NC State Invitational will also be held at the Derr Track, on Sunday, May 13, the last day a track athlete can post an NCAA qualifying time prior to regional competition.
The NCAA Outdoor Regional Championships is slated for May 24-26 in Jacksonville, Fla. The NCAA Outdoor National Championships will return to Des Moines, Iowa, on June 6-9, followed by the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on June 22-30.
“We have two priorities when we put together our schedule,” Geiger said. “The first is to match our athletes with strong competition to get them ready to win ACC championships. The second is to qualify as many athletes as possible for the NCAA champions by participating in other events between the ACCs and the final day of qualifying for the NCAAs.
“That’s why we are hosting a second event this year on the last day to qualify for NCAA competition. And we would also like to show off the enhancements to our track.”
Upgrades to the Derr Track/Dail Soccer Stadium complex include an operations center in the east endzone that includes track-level restrooms, new chair back seating in the grandstands and an enhanced street-level entrance.
