RALEIGH, N.C. - The frenetic activity at Carter-Finley Stadium in the spring of 2009 will be recognized at tonight's NC State-Duke men's basketball game, when Falcon Engineering, along with NC State Design and Construction Services and the athletics department, for receiving an Engineering Award for Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies of North Carolina.
On April 20, 2009, two days after the annual Kay Yow Spring Football game, contractors Landscape Unlimited began removing the pronounced, two-and-a-half feet crown that had been one of Carter-Finley's trademarks since the stadium opened 1966. The grass and topsoil was scraped away and more than 500 tandem dump trucks full of dirt, gravel and drainage tile were removed from the field surface.
A state-of-the-art irrigation system was added, along with a sand-based playing surface that meets United States Golf Association greens specification for drainage and artificial turf collars for high traffic areas on both sidelines.
The project, which came in well under budget at $750,000, brought Carter-Finley's playing surface up to par with both the Dail Practice Facilities, where the Wolfpack football team trains throughout the year, and the other stadiums in the ACC.
The design plan for the project was developed by NC State assistant athletic director for facilities Ray Brincefield and NC State director of design and construction services Andy Snead. Falcon Engineering, led by NC State graduate Tommy Faulkner, assisted with construction oversight and project management, including DNA testing for the new turf, design services and final inspection and acceptance.
