RALEIGH, N.C. -
NC State volleyball rebounded from Tuesday’s loss to North Carolina by sweeping Boston College tonight in Reynolds Coliseum. This marks the first time since 2000 that the Wolfpack has swept an ACC opponent in three sets. The victory moves the Pack to 1-1 in ACC play and 11-3 overall in the 2010 season. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-2 in conference and 8-7 on the year.
The Wolfpack was led offensively by Margaret Salata, who scored 12 kills to go along with six digs and five blocks on the match. Becah Fogle chipped in nine kills, and Alex Smith added seven to contribute to the balanced NC State offensive attack. Megan Cyr dished out 27 assists to lead the squad for the 14th consecutive match.
Defensively, the Pack maintained a team effort—each player appearing in the match contributed at least one dig. Alexa Micek led the charge, picking up 10, while Cyr added eight and Smith seven.
In the first set, the Wolfpack earned 10 kills, pushing the score to 13-8 before forcing Boston College to call a timeout. Out of the break, back-to-back-to-back Pack kills forced the Eagles to burn another timeout. NC State led by as many as 10 in the set, and eventually won by a score of 25-14.
The Pack jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set, but committed errors that gave the Eagles a chance to gain momentum and earn a 10-12 lead. However, Boston College began to make mistakes, and the Wolfpack were able to regain the lead 16-13. The score continued to bounce back and forth, but NC State took the set 25-20 in the end.
The third set showcased NC State’s dominant offense. The Wolfpack took an early 10-2 lead thanks to a string of Luciana Shafer kills and a Smith service ace, among other things. NC State continued to capitalize on Boston College’s errors, eventually winning the frame 25-11.
The Pack returns to action Saturday, Sept. 25 against Maryland at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum.
