CLEMSON, S.C. - Tanya Cain scored in the 70th minute to send the NC State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Clemson to open Atlantic Coast Conference play Thursday night at Riggs Field.
NC State improves to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, while Clemson falls to 5-4 and 0-1 in the league.
Junior keeper Kim Kern made seven saves to earn her third-straight shutout and fourth of the season.
Playing its second-straight road match, NC State finished with a 25-12 shot advantage in the game.
The constant barrage of shots by the Pack finally paid dividends midway through the second half. Head coach Steve Springthorpe inserted freshman midfielder Ariela Schreibeis into the game at the 68:59 mark.
1:17 seconds later she took a shot that wasn't handled cleanly by Clemson keeper Lauren Arnold. That allowed Cain to knock in the rebound for her fourth goal of the season, and third game winner.
Kern made her final save of the night in the 84th minute to preserve the clean sheet and give NC State its third-consecutive 1-0 victory. Additionally, all seven wins have come by shutout.
The Wolfpack's offense was on the attack from the opening whistle - registering its first shot just 91 seconds into play.
The shots continued throughout the first 45 minutes with NC State registering 19 attempts towards net by halftime.
Arnold was forced to make seven stops alone in the first half.
Cain nearly gave the visitors the lead earlier when she hit the cross bar at the 34:20 mark of the first half.
On the other side of the pitch, Clemson was a bit more economical with its attempts. The home-standing Tigers mustered up just five shots, but they were on-target with four of them that Kern hauled in to keep it a 0-0 score at intermission.
NC State returns home on Sunday to host Boston College at 1 p.m.
