BURLINGTON, IOWA - NC State posted its lowest team score in two and a half years with a -12 (276) to finish in sole possession of second place among 15 teams at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.
Despite the staggering low score by the Wolfpack, the five-man squad could not chase down Iowa, who cruised to a 15-stroke victory at -31 (833).
NC State finished the 54-hole tournament with a team total of -16 (283-289-276=848), the programs best showing since a -26 (838) winning score at the Hootie at Bulls' Bay Intercollegiate from March 23-25, 2008, in Awenday, S.C. The third round saw NC State shoot a -17 (271) that day.
Senior Brandon Detweiler had his finest day as a collegiate with a five-under 67, topping his previous best round at NC State by two strokes, to place all alone in third at -9 (69-71-67=207).
The Akron, Pa., native had seven birdies on his round, including five on the front nine alone that saw him go out in 31. His previous best collegiate finish was a tie for seventh at the Big 4 Challenge.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton also had a fine outing today by shooting -4 (68) to tie his best college round that featured five birdies. He finished in a tie for sixth at -5 (71-72-68=211).
Freshman Albin Choi broke 70 for the first time with the Wolfpack by recording a three-under 69 on Tuesday's round that saw him record five birdies. He wound up tied for ninth at -4 (70-73-69=212).
Graham Baillargeon's three birdies today allowed him to record an even-par 72 and finish tied for 26th at +2 (73-73-72=218).
Mark McMillen had his best showing of the tournament with a two-over 74 to finish tied for 65th at +16 (80-78-74=232). He had three consecutive birdies from holes No. 9-11.
Next up is the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Oct. 4-5 at NC State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
