KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The NC State men's golf team opened its season by winning The Invitational at The Ocean Course. The Wolfpack fired an even-par 288 during Tuesday's final round to win by six strokes over runner-up Notre Dame.
The victory is the 47th in program history dating back to its first in 1933, and the first 54-hole win since garnering the Hootie at Bulls Bay title during the 2007-08 campaign.
NC State was a mark of consistency throughout the two-day event. All six competitors finished in the top-20 among a field of 72 golfers.
"The team played well with all six guys finishing in the top-20," said Brandon Detweiler. "We we're solid coming in, especially with hole 17 playing extremely hard today.
"This was our goal coming down to this tournament. We knew we had a good chance to do well here and we accomplished our goal. It's the first win for this program in about a year and a half and the first for this group so we're pretty excited."
The Wolfpack, who led by eight strokes after round one, and began today just one shot behind the Irish, finished with a team score of +9 (289-296-288=873). Notre Dame was next at +15 (879) and host College of Charleston was third at +16 (880).
NC State owned the top team scores in rounds one and three of the tournament.
Senior Brandon Detweiler led the way with a tied for 10th place finish at +6 (79-71-72=222). His even-par round featured two birdies and 14 pars.
Juniors Mark McMillen and Graham Baillargeon, and sophomore Mitchell Sutton all tied for 12th at +7 (223).
McMillen recorded three birdies on his round today to finish up at +7 (72-77-74=223).
Baillargeon bounced back well from his afternoon round 81 yesterday with his second one-under-par 71 of the tournament. A third birdie of the day put the Canadian native at -3 for the day, through 11 holes. He gave two strokes back, but still finished strong in his Wolfpack debut at +7 (71-81-71=223).
Sutton's day mirrored Detweiler's with an even-par 72 that saw him record two birdies and two bogeys. He finished at +7 (79-72-72=223).
Freshman Albin Choi finished 18th in his collegiate debut at +8 (75-76-73=224). Four birdies highlighted the Canadian's final round.
Junior Chad Day finished tied for 20th at +10 (71-78-77=226). He knocked in a pair of birdies on his trek around the course on Tuesday.
Charleston's John Duke Hudson earned the individual title by recording the only sub-par score of the invitational, finishing at -2 (214).
This tournament was played at the par-72, 7,504-yard Ocean Course, the host of the 2012 PGA Championship, and the No. 4 ranked Public Course by Golf Digest.
