Wolfpack Tops Eastern Kentucky in Season Opener

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
NC State picked up its first win today, Friday, Aug. 27, against Eastern Kentucky in the Western Carolina Tournament. The 3-0 victory gives head coach Bryan Bunn his first at the helm of the Wolfpack program. It is also the third time in the last four years the Pack picked up a win in its season opener.
The Pack’s starting seven comprised of Becah Fogle, Megan Cyr, Margaret Salata, Brie Merriwether, Alex Smith, Luciana Shafer and Kelly Wood, all of whom played in each of the three sets. Sophomores Sarah Griggs and Alexa Micek also saw action for the Wolfpack.
Smith, a senior, and junior transfer Shafer led the way on offense with 12 kills a piece, while sophomore transfer Cyr lifted 37 assists and contributed four kills of her own. Fogle, another newcomer on the Wolfpack roster, blasted 10 kills and earned the only service ace for the squad in the match. Salata, a junior, scored two solo blocks, along with five assists while pacing the Wolfpack with a .545 hitting percentage.
Wood, a junior libero, paced the Wolfpack defensively, gathering 16 digs for the match. She also added three assists in three sets played. Brie Merriwether was the only freshman to see action during the match, putting up impressive numbers in her Wolfpack debut. She scored five kills and assisted in three Pack blocks.
NC State overcame a slow start in the first set (25-22) to handily win the second by a score of 25-14. The Wolfpack won the third set 25-20 to complete the three game sweep of the Colonels.
The Wolfpack return to action tonight to take on Coppin State tonight at 5 p.m.
