RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team downed visiting High Point, 3-2, in an exhibition contest Thursday night the Dail Soccer Field. The Pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute of action, but High Point would then net a pair of scores to make the final outcome 3-2.
NC State would get on the scoreboard early, as the Pack found the back of the net in just the fifth minute of action. Junior Craig Sutherland won the ball in the midfield and after a few dribbles, slotted the ball into the High Point penalty box. Freshman Mamadou Kansaye got to the end of the pass, and slipped the ball into the back of the net at the 4:11 mark for the lone score in the first half.
The Pack held a 6-2 shot advantage at the half, and limited to the Panthers to no shots on goal.
NC State would open up the scoring early in the second half, notching a pair of goals in the first seven minutes of the half. Sutherland would deposit his first of two on the day, after he headed in a Michael Smith corner kick just 36 seconds into the second half.
Sutherland wasn't done scoring, as he once again found the back of the net in the 53rd minute. Senior Chris Zuerner found Smith on the wing, and Smith's shot on goal was saved, but Sutherland was right there to clean up the rebound at the 52:07 mark. The Pack would find itself up 3-0 in the 53rd minute.
High Point would not go away, and made the game close at the end. The Panther's Karo Okiomah converted a penalty kick after a NC State handball at the 58:53 mark. High Point would also score off a corner kick, when Justin Pruetz scored at the 82:25 mark.
NC State held a 10-7 shot advantage for the game, and held High Point to just two shots on goal for the game.
NC State will start its season over Labor Day weekend, competing in the Duke/Nike Classic. The Pack will face Sacramento State on Friday, September 3, at 5:00 p.m., and then face No. 20 Louisville on Sunday, September 5, at noon.
