Wolfpack student-athletes will begin competition today at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Senior John Martinez will compete in the semifinals of the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:15 pm (eastern) time, while senior Kayla Lawson will compete in the high jump finals beginning at 7:45 pm (eastern) time.
On Friday, sophomore Lawanda Henry will throw the shot put and Martinez hopes to be running in the finals of the steeplechase. Freshman Ryan Hill will run in the finals of the 5000 meters on Saturday.
Martinez, who graduated from NC State last month, is looking for his second All-America certificate in the steeplechase, as he won honors in the event in 2008. He was also an All-ACC performer in that event for 2010.
Lawson, a former walk-on from Westerville, Ohio, posted a personal best of 5’11 at the regional in meet in Greensboro to qualify for the national meet. She also graduated from NC State in May. This will mark her first appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Henry, while only a sophomore, is competing in her third NCAA championship, as she qualified indoors and outdoors in 2009. Henry is the school record holder in the outdoor shot with a 54’01” mark and the indoor shot at 53’2-1/4”.
Hill, a freshman in track eligibility, set school records in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters this outdoor season, posting times of 3:40.81 and 13:44.36 respectively. A 2009 cross country All-American, he also won the ACC outdoor title in the 10,000 meters.
