RALEIGH, N.C. – For the second straight year, the NC State men’s soccer team was among the leaders in the ACC in the annual APR report. In this year’s report, the Pack was ranked third in the conference with an APR of 979, only behind Duke (995) and Boston College (983).
"Having one of the best APR scores in the ACC is just another example of how the men's soccer program is committed to being successful in the classroom,” said head coach George Tarantini. “The players take great pride and work extremely hard to achieve their academic goals.”
During the 2009-2010 school year the men's soccer team posted a team grade-point-average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award. Three members of the Pack were also named to the 2009 All-ACC Academic team. Christopher Widman, Chris Zuerner, and Kris Byrd were all named for the second consecutive year.
This past March, Romulo Manzano was awarded an ACC Postgraduate Scholarship. Manzano and Widman were also voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District men's soccer team.
A total of five players from the 2009 men’s soccer team earned degrees from NC State this past spring semester, with two of those players getting their master’s degrees.
Widman earned a master’s degree in economics and Federico Nachmann earned a master’s degree in park, recreation and tourism. Manzano, Chris Franczkowski, and Alan Sanchez all received their undergrad degrees as well. Franczkowski majored in business administration with a concentration in marketing, Manzano majored in computer science, and Sanchez in sports management.
Last season the Pack finished No. 23 in the final NSCAA rankings after NC State advanced to the ACC Tournament championship game, then to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
