RALEIGH, N.C. – Chris Schaeffer hit three home runs and drove in six runs Wednesday, to lead NC State to an 18-1 blowout of Coppin State at Doak Field at Dail Park. Schaeffer, Harold Riggins and John Gianis had four hits apiece for the Wolfpack, and Andrew Ciencin and Drew Poulk chipped in three RBIs each.
The Wolfpack won for the third time in a row and the fifth time in six games, improving to 20-10 overall. Coppin State fell to 10-14 with the loss. Sophomore righthander Mike Russo (1-0), the second of five NC State pitchers, got the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Andrew Kiessling (1-3) took the loss after allowing 12 runs, 10 of them earned, on 11 hits in two innings of work.
NC State got the game started by taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Pratt Maynard’s RBI single to center field, then ended it for all intents and purposes with an 11-run second inning. Fifteen batters came to the plate in the inning and 12 of them reached base, including eight straight at one point. Schaeffer started things with his first homer of the game, and Gianis singled to center. Matt Bergquist hit a grounder to shortstop that should have been a double-play ball, Alexander Garza bobbled the ball for an error and all hands were safe. Dallas Poulk singled to load the bases, and Ciencin cleared them with a three-run double to left-center. Maynard walked and Drew Poulk hit a 420-foot homer over the all in left field to make it 8-0. Riggins hit a ground-rule double into the right-field corner and scored on Schaeffer’s single to left. Schaeffer went to second when left fielder Craig Richmond overran the ball for an error, and then scored on Gianis’s double down the left-field line. Gianis scored on Bergquist’s double to left-center, and Poulk topped off the inning with a triple to right, driving in Gianis and leaving NC State ahead by a 12-0 count.
Schaeffer’s second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the bottom of the third, made it 14-0, and the score held there until the top of the sixth, when Coppin State scored an unearned run. Richmond reached on an error by Riggins at first, went to second on a passed ball, took third on Harry Williams’ single through the right side of the infield, and scored on a double play.
Schaeffer made it 16-1 with another two-run homer to left, this one in the bottom of the seventh, and Riggins’ two-run double in the eighth ended the scoring.
NC State returns to action on Friday in the first game of a three-game series at North Carolina. Game times are 7 p.m. on Friday, 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM and on-line at gopack.com.
