The NC State football squad held its first scrimmage of spring drills at noon on Saturday, working out for 1-1/2 hours in Carter-Finley Stadium. The first team offense battled the first-team defense for 48 plays and the second teams worked against each other for 48 plays.
On the first pass play of the scrimmage, redshirt sophomore quarterback Mike Glennon connected with senior wideout Owen Spencer for a 79-yard touchdown. Glennon would complete 12 of his 25 attempts on the afternoon for 179 yards and two scores, including another to Spencer.
Glennon and sophomore Daniel Imhoff led the two squads, as 2009 starter Russell Wilson watched from the sidelines as he prepares for tonight’s baseball game versus Virginia. Wilson is sitting out of spring drills while playing with the NC State baseball squad. Imhoff was 8-12 for the afternoon for 94 yards. Neither QB threw an interception.
Spencer led all receivers with 96 yards on his two touchdown grabs, while Jay Smith had five catches for 43 yards. Halfback Curtis Underwood caught three ballsfor 28 yards and was the leading rusher with 14 carries for another 44 yards. Jarvis Williams had two catches for 29 yards.
Senior placekicker Josh Czajkowski connected on four of five field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder. His only miss was from 53 yards.
On defense, the squad was led by two players who missed the 2009 campaign: linebacker Nate Irving and defensive tackle Markus Kuhn. Irving had eight stops, including 3.5 for loss and a sack and caused a fumble, while Kuhn had six tackles, including five for loss and two sacks. Ends Darryl Cato-Bishop and Michael Lemon each had four tackles.
“We’re a tougher football team with a little more intensity than we’ve had in the past in our first scrimmage,” said head coach Tom O’Brien following the workout. “As long as this is the worst scrimmage we have and we keep getting better, I consider this a good scrimmage.”
O’Brien announced that cornerback Gary Grant will miss the rest of spring due to a lower abdominal injury.
