RALEIGH, N.C. — With critical conference games looming the next two weekends and the taste of this past weekend’s series loss to North Carolina still fresh, NC State this week plays a pair of midweek games, Tuesday vs. North Carolina Central and Wednesday vs. UNC Wilmington.
Both games will be played at Doak Field at Dail Park. Game times for both is 6:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on WKNC-FM (88.1) and on-line at gopack.com.
NC State dropped two of three games in a big Atlantic Coast conference series this past weekend, falling 14-7 in the opener and 9-6 in the finale. The Wolfpack won the middle game of the series, 14-6. Despite the losses at Chapel Hill, the Wolfpack has played some of its best baseball over the past few weeks. NC State (21-12 overall) has won six of its last nine, and included in that is a series win over then-top-ranked Virginia.
NC Central comes into play this week at 1-31. The Eagles’ lone victory came this past Friday, a 7-6 victory over Savannah State, which rebounded and won the remaining two games of the three-game weekend series.
In the first meeting between the Wolfpack and Eagles, on March 15, NC State took advantage of the cozy confines of the old Durham Athletic Park to hit five home runs, scored in every inning, and pulled away for a 24-6 rout.
The Wolfpack’s lefthanded hitters took full advantage of the old minor league stadium, with Dallas Poulk, Danny Canela and Terran Senay (twice) going deep the short way, The only righthanded hitter to go deep for the Pack, third baseman Andrew Ciencin, went the other way with his home run, taking the ball to right-center.
As is the case this week, the Pack played UNC Wilmington the day after facing NC Central, and the Seahawks came away with a 9-6 victory at Brooks Field in Wilmington. UNCW built an 8-0 lead through three innings, scoring against three different NC State pitchers. The Wolfpack rallied with six runs in the middle innings, but the Seahawks hung on for the victory.
UNCW, which plays Charleston Southern on Tuesday night, is 19-13 following a three-game sweep at Delaware this past weekend. The Seahawks have won four in a row, five of their last six, and eight of their last 11.
Following the two midweek games, NC State will hit the road for a key weekend ACC series at Maryland.
