RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State head volleyball coach Bryan Bunn announced today the addition of Pete Hoyer as an assistant coach on the volleyball staff. Hoyer joins the Wolfpack with 16 seasons of collegiate coaching experience, including nine years as the head coach at the Dayton.
“Bryan is very knowledgeable, and he has been successful everywhere he has coached,” said Hoyer. “NC State provides all the support we will need to win, and Raleigh is an incredible city. I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Wolfpack.”
“We are excited to have someone with Pete’s experience and work ethic on our staff,” said Bunn. “He was a very successful head coach, and he knows the effort needed to get NC State volleyball to the top.”
Hoyer returns to college coaching after serving as the head volleyball coach at the University of Dayton from 1994-2002. Over his nine year tenure, he accumulated a record of 178-96, including a 102-42 slate in the Atlantic 10 Conference. In 1998 and 2001, Hoyer coached Dayton to Atlantic 10 conference championships, picking up conference coach of the year honors in 2001. He ended his stint at Dayton by posting eight consecutive winning seasons.
Hoyer’s coaching career began as an assistant at Southwest Texas State from 1987-89. He then served as an assistant at Ohio from 1990-93 before taking over the Dayton program.
In 2004 Hoyer earned a teaching certificate from Huston-Tillotson College. He taught special education at three different area schools in Texas from 2003-10. During that time, he assisted with volleyball and was the head coach of the women’s track team at Hutto High School.
Hoyer is a 1985 graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire, where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in social studies, concentrating in history. He later earned a master’s degree in physical education, with a minor in educational administration from Southwest Texas State University in 1990.
A native of Beaver Dam, Wis., Hoyer resides in Raleigh with his wife Stephanie and their son, Ethan.
