VT Takes Opener from Softball, 2-0

RALEIGH, N.C. – Two homers put Virginia Tech past NC State, 2-0, in the Wolfpack’s ACC opener on Saturday, March 20 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The loss sends the Pack to 16-12 (0-1 ACC), while the Hokies move to 8-16 (1-0 ACC).
Lindsay Campana (10-5) took the loss, fanning nine batters. Kenzie Roark (3-9) picked up the decision.
Claudia Cooper led the Pack at the plate with two singles.
Courtney Liddle hit a solo shot to dead center early on, giving the Hokies a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Pack got two on with two down in the bottom of the fourth, but couldn’t punch one in. Cooper dropped her second single of the day and Bridget Desbois reached when Kelsey Hensel kicked a grounder at third. But Kristine Bechtholdt gave Hensel another opportunity with a grounder, and she stepped on third base to end the inning.
Virginia Tech’s lead doubled on another solo dinger, this time via Kristen Froehlich, in the top of the fifth.
NC State and Virginia Tech will begin game two of today’s twin bill immediately.
