Four NC State wrestlers survived the first day of action Wednesday at the UNCG Southern Scuffle and will be battling to place in the top eight of their respective weight classes when the tournament resumes on Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum’s Special Events Center.
Junior 141-pounder Darrius Little got a tough first-round draw and lost an 8-3 decision to 11th-ranked Michael Mangrum of Oregon State. Little recovered to win four straight matches in the wrestlebacks and will face Bloomsburg’s Derek Shingara on Thursday. Little was 15-5 this season after Wednesday’s action.
Junior 157-pounder Colton Palmer got off to an impressive start, pinning Nicholas Gordon of Virginia and Travis Puckett of Appalachian State in his first two bouts before losing to North Carolina’s Kyle Kiss in the third round. Palmer, now 11-6, will square off with Julian Colon of Liberty when action resumes on Thursday.
At 174 pounds, junior Quinton Godley won twice in three matches Wednesday. Godley’s loss was a pin at the hands of top-ranked Mack Lewnes of Cornell in the second round. Godley, who opened the tournament with a 10-5 decision over UNC Greensboro’s Keith Brown, recovered from the loss to Lewnes by taking a 5-3 decision over Virginia’s William Coggins. Godley, who improved to 11-6, will begin action Thursday with Canaan Bethea of Pennsylvania.
Sophomore heavyweight Eloheim Palma also dropped his first bout of the tournament, but recovered to defeat teammate Bobby Isola 7-4 and Michael Horton of Edinboro 4-2. Palma, wrestling unattached, will face Odie Delaney of The Citadel on Thursday.
Senior 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell, the 2009 national champion, did not wrestle and will make his 2010-11 debut next week in dual matches at Bloomsburg on Jan. 4 and at Rider on Jan. 5. Caldwell missed the 2009-10 season due to shoulder surgery.
