RENO, Nev. - Thane Robinson's three-pointer from well beyond the arc proved to be the game-winning shot for Nevada in a 74-70 win over NC State in the opening game of the Nugget Classic Friday afternoon from Lawlor Events Center.
In the first meeting between the only two Division I teams that use the Wolfpack nickname, the club that goes by Wolf Pack, with the space, overcame an eight-point second-half deficit to improve to 4-1 on the year.
A game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds from Shavon Moore didn't hurt either.
Nevada, the top three-point shooting team in the Western Athletic Conference, was ice cold from beyond the arc all game long, having only connected on 1-of-11 attempts, until Robinson released her game-deciding shot with 16 seconds left.
Brittany Strachan had given NC State (3-3) a 70-69 lead when she drained a three-pointer of her own with 24 seconds to go.
Momentum seemed in favor of the visiting Wolfpack when a running scoop shot from Amber White (19 points) made it 48-40 with 17:25 to play in the second half.
It was still a 61-54 lead for NC State after White converted a three-point play with 8:19 left in regulation.
But Nevada dug in and ran off seven consecutive points to knot the game 61-all at the 5:13 mark. After a Bonae Holston (14 points) free throw, a Nicole Williams' jumper put Nevada in the lead, 63-62, for the first time since the 11:20 mark of the first half.
NC State never led again until Strachan's late three in the final minute of the game.
Nevada opened the game by make eight of its first 11 shots from the floor to take a 16-11 lead with 13:48 showing on the clock. Moore made three buckets early.
NC State took its first lead at the 10:26 mark on a second-chance lay in by Kody Burke (10 points). A minute later Emili Tasler drained her second three-pointer of the half for a 24-20 advantage.
The Wolfpack never relinquished the lead the rest of the first half, but it was never more than a four-point lead. NC State led 40-36 at the break.
NC State's leading scorer Marissa Kastanek was held scoreless in the first half, and wound up with just one point.
NC State will play Minnesota in the consolation game Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
