Wrestling Wins 3 Weight Classes At Pembroke Classic

PEMBROKE, N.C. — Junior 125-pounder Mike Moreno, freshman 149-pounder Matt Nereim and junior 174-pounder Quinton Godley all went undefeated Saturday and won their respective weight classes at the Pembroke Wrestling Classic.
The tournament was held on the campus at UNC Pembroke. All wrestlers competed unattached. There was no team scoring.
Moreno, who improved to 11-1 on the young season, defeated Old Dominion’s Jerome Robinson 4-2 in the finals. Moreno is coming off an impressive third-place finish at last weekend’s Wolfpack Open, during which he lost in the second round and had to win five matches in a row to take third place.
Nereim, who went 2-2 last weekend at the Wolfpack Open, improved to 6-2 with his 4-0 performance on Saturday. He won a 6-0 decision over Newberry’s Dale Debacco in the championship bout.
Godley took the finals at 174 pounds with a 7-4 decision over Tristan Warner of ODU. Godley won all four of his bouts in the tournament to improve to 10-6 on the season.
In addition to the three winners, NC State had several wrestlers place in the tournament. Juniors Darrius Little and Colton Palmer were runners-up. Little went 4-1 at 141 pounds, dropping a 4-0 decision to Brock Coutu of Newberry in the championship bout. That was his first loss of the season. He is 9-1. Palmer went 3-1 at 157 pounds, falling 4-2 to Sean Byers of Newberry in the finals. Palmer now is 8-2.
Redshirt-freshman 197-pounder KaRonne Jones went 3-2 and finished fourth, falling 4-2 to Andrew Ewers of the Southeast Wrestling Club in the bout for third place.
Redshirt-sophomore 125-pounder Pedram Rahmatabadi went 3-2 to take fifth place at 125 pounds. He defeated Connor McDonald of Newberry by medical forfeit to take fifth place. He is 6-3 for the season.
Sophomore 133-pounder Dale Shull fell 10-0 to Matt Hall of Limestone in the opening round, then won four straight bouts in the consolation bracket and finished in fifth place after winning six of eight matches overall. Shull pinned Duke’s Peter Terrezza in 1:51 to take fifth place.
NC State will wrestle its first dual match of the season next Saturday, Nov. 27, at Oklahoma. The match will begin at 4 p.m. EST.
