CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--- NC State gymnastics volunteered at the North Carolina Children's Hospital as part of the N.C. Children's Promise Thursday, November 18 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The entire Wolfpack roster took part in the event which included interacting with patients and passing out autographed posters.
"I met a little girl named Desiree, who wasn't allowed any contact," said sophomore Rachel Fincham. "She had burns all over her body and recent skin grafts, but all she could talk about was how much she loved to draw and her favorite colors. It really amazed me to see how happy she was even through all of it."
"One of the girls my group met with was a 12-year old named Taylor. Today was the first day she had been able to walk outside of her room since August," said junior Jackie Yanchocik. "It was really touching to see someone going through chemotherapy, yet staying so free spirited. It encouraged me to stay strong, since she's been through so much."
"She was so excited about the poster and having somebody come visit her," said senior Brittany Vontz. "Her room was decorated with christmas lights and stuffed animals. It was a rewarding experience to see someone staying positive while going through so much."
"All the kids we spoke with were excited that people came in to see them, talk to them, and hang out with them," said junior Becca Teich. "Even though it was a small gesture, you could tell it really made them feel good."
The N.C. Children's Promise benefits the North Carolina Children's Hospital, which serves more than 70,000 children from all 100 North Carolina counties. Donors may make contribution's through the N.C. Children's Promise website, www.NCChildrensPromise.org.
