RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Albin Choi captured his first career collegiate victory as NC State men's golf swept the 2010 Wolfpack Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Choi held off a late charge by 26th-ranked Lee Bedford from Wake Forest to earn medalist honors by one shot, firing a final round 72 (+1) to fend off Bedford's 67 (-4).
NC State overcame a final round, three-shot deficit to outlast Duke and take home the team championship. The Wolfpack posted the only under-par team round on Tuesday, a 283 (-1) to cement a four-stroke victory.
The Wolfpack Intercollegiate marks Choi's first win as a collegian, his second-straight top-10 finish, and the second time in three years that an NC State golfer has won the home event (Matt Hill at River Landing in 2009).
The Toronto, Canada native's three-round total of 207 ties the team's season low, set September 21 by Brandon Detweiler, when he finished third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The win is the second in three events this season for the Wolfpack, who was ranked No. 16 by Golfstat coming into the tournament. NC State opened the season with a victory at the Invitational at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Wolfpack hasn't been lower than second in the team standings after any of its nine rounds played this fall.
The team's total of 844 (-8) sets a new low for 2010, bettering the 848 shot at the Golfweek Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.
NC State's final round comeback came courtesy of strong play by several Wolfpack golfers. Brandon Detweiler and Mark McMillen tied for fifth place, playing the final round a combined even-par. McMillen climbed into the top-five thanks to a final round 70 (-1), while Detweiler carded 72 (+1) over the final 18.
Mitchell Sutton played his best golf of the tournament, firing a 69 (-2) down the stretch to come away with a tie for 16th, his third top-20 in as many events.
Over the final few holes, NC State's team lead was trimmed to one shot. Sutton birdied the final two holes, and Detweiler birdied No. 17 to put the lead back to a more comfortable five-shot advantage in the late stages.
Playing as an individual, Chad Day earned a 13th place finish with a 72 (+1) on Tuesday.
NC State and Duke will hook up again this weekend when the Blue Devils host the Rod Myers Invitational this coming Sunday and Monday, October 10-11, in Durham.
