DURHAM, N.C. – Duke scored once in each half to notch a 2-0 victory over the NC State women’s soccer team Sunday night at Koskinen Stadium.
The Blue Devils struck first in the 19th minute with a goal from Nicole Lipp. The unassisted tally was her first of the year, and occurred when she scored on a free kick from 27 yards out.
Senior Nadia Aboulhosn had the best scoring chance for the Wolfpack just over two minutes after the goal, but Duke keeper Tara Campbell was in the right place to make the save.
Duke marched into halftime with the 1-0 lead and a 7-2 advantage in shots, while both teams had a pair of corner kick attempts. NC State keeper Kim Kern came up with three first-half saves to keep it a one-goal margin with 45 minutes to play.
NC State junior Kristina Argiroff nearly tied the match at 1-all in the 48th minute when her header sailed just right of goal.
Not long after, the second-half marker came at the 53:42 mark when Laura Weinberg scored her team-leading ninth goal of the 2010 campaign. Mollie Pathman and Gilda Doria earned assists on the play for the Blue Devils.
The win gave Duke its third-straight win and, in the process, improved to 10-5-3 overall, and 4-4-1 in the ACC. Meanwhile, NC State is now 7-10 (1-7 ACC).
Kern made five saves in 90 minutes of work. Argiroff wound up with two of the Pack’s five shots on the night.
Duke finished with a 14-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Wolfpack visits Virginia and Virginia Tech this Thursday and Sunday, respectively to complete the regular-season slate.
