ATLANTA, GA. -
NC State volleyball dropped an ACC contest to Georgia Tech today by a score of 1-3. The loss brings the Wolfpack to 12-9 overall in the 2010 season and 2-7 in conference play, while the Yellow Jackets jump to 13-7 overall and 6-3 in the ACC.
Luciana Shafer paced the Pack offensively for the second straight match, scoring 10 of the squad’s 38 kills. Freshman Elena Frac continues to improve in her initial campaign with the Wolfpack, earning a career-high 10 kills, which surpasses her previous mark of six. In addition, Anna Moore and Margaret Salata both scored six kills for the Pack.
Defensively, Kelly Wood earned double-digit digs for the fifteenth match in the 2010 season and the sixth match in a row, while Taylor Pritchard added eight.
Megan Cyr dished out 31 assists and also notched two service aces and four kills in the match.
The Wolfpack offense was sluggish in the first set, where the squad hit at a .038 attack percentage. Thanks to two Georgia Tech attack errors and a Salata kill, the Pack was able to jump out to a 3-2 advantage, the only NC State lead of the set. The Yellow Jackets proceeded to go on two six point runs, and eventually won the set 25-14.
In the second set, the NC State offense showed great improvement, hitting at a .306 clip, but fell behind 2-5 early in the frame. However, the squad showed great resilience, battling back to knot the score at seven behind three Frac kills. Georgia Tech then went on another run, this time of nine straight points, to take a 8-17 lead. The Wolfpack then responded with its own series of runs to pull within one point, 20-19. Finally, thanks to back-to-back Pack kills, the squad took the set 27-25.
NC State never held a lead in the third set, despite six ties in the frame. Following a 12-12 tie, Georgia Tech’s offense exploded, scoring five kills, forcing an NC State timeout. The Wolfpack then pulled within one point 18-19, but a five point Georgia Tech run halted NC State’s momentum, and the Pack fell by a 20-25 mark.
After falling behind 5-11 in the fourth set, head coach Bryan Bunn was forced to use a Wolfpack timeout. The squad responded, bringing the score to 10-15, causing Georgia Tech to call its first timeout of the set. NC State’s offense could never get going, though, and the Pack dropped the set 16-25.
The Wolfpack returns to Reynolds Coliseum Friday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 23 to take on Virginia and Virginia Tech, respectively. Both contests are at 7 p.m. Saturday’s matchup versus Virginia Tech will be the Dig Pink match supporting breast cancer.
All NC State volleyball matches are free to the public.
