Be a Judge in Red Rally Dunk Contest
RALEIGH, N.C. - The Red Rally at Reynolds Coliseum will be a raucous celebration of NC State basketball, past and present.
Both the Wolfpack men's and women's basketball teams will participate in the two-hour event, which will be hosted by Wolfpack basketball legend Julius Hodge and 99.9-FM The Fan's Mark Thomas.
Head coaches Sidney Lowe and Kellie Harper will direct players from their teams in the interactive evening, which will include drills, scrimmages, a dunk contest, fan challenges and giveaways.
It will be the NC State debut of Lowe's highly anticipated freshman class of C.J. Leslie, Lorenzo Brown and Ryan Harrow, along with all the returning veterans from both squads.
Fans who can't attend the event have two options for viewing, a free live stream on GoPack.com's All-Access or on Time-Warner Cable's Channel 18 in the following communities: Apex, Bunn, Cary, Four Oaks, Franklinton, Fuquay-Varina, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Louisburg, Morrisville, Pine Level, Raleigh, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, Youngsville and Zebulon.
The event begins at 7 p.m., but doors will open at 5 p.m. so students and other patrons can enjoy an elaborate Fan Zone experience. If the Coliseum reaches its capacity, overflow crowds can watch the festivities on the video board at Doak Field.
GoPack.com managing editor Tim Peeler and NC State director of photography Roger Winstead will be on hand to unveil their recently released book, "NC State Basketball: 100 Years of Innovation," a history of NC State's first century on the court. Cost for the book is $30 at the event, with free autographs by Peeler and Winstead, both of whom graduated from NC State during its centennial year of 1987.
The Fan Zone will also include four 10-minute videos encompassing the four major eras of Wolfpack basketball: the Everett Case era, the Norm Sloan era, the Jim Valvano era and the modern day era. The videos will include interviews with Wolfpack stars and highlights from some of the school's greatest moments.
There will be two similar displays detailing the 36 years of history of the women's program, from its first season under Peanut Doak, to the 34 years under Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow and the current program under Harper, who is entering her second season as the head coach of the Wolfpack women.
Each of the four corners of the west end zone will be set up to celebrate the history of NC State basketball, with memorabilia, trophies, artifacts, magazines and trophies collected primarily by Senior Associate Athletics Director Frank Weedon and catalogued by Peeler over the last 18 months.
And at the center of the activities will be the Reynolds Coliseum noise meter, which rallied spectators at home games, in the Dixie Classic, during the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and in the NCAA Tournament for more than half a century.
Younger fans can play on three large inflatable basketball games in the center of the court or have their face painted by professionals. Others can have the picture taken cutting down the nets, a tradition Case brought with him from Indiana high school basketball when he arrived in Raleigh in 1946.
Admission and parking are free for the event.
