DURHAM, N.C. – NC State freshman golfer Albin Choi chalked up his second individual title in the last six days with a one-stroke win at the Rod Myers Invitational on Monday at Duke University Golf Club.
The 14th-ranked NC State men’s golf team finished runner-up to Iowa for the second time this fall, five shots behind the Hawkeyes. The Wolfpack finished with a team total of 8-under 856 for the 54-hole event, after a final round 1-under 287.
Choi had a 1-under 71 Monday to stand alone at the top of the leaderboard with a final score of 5-under 211. The first-year golfer also won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate by one shot this past Tuesday with a score of 6-under 207.
Choi, from Toronto, Canada, displayed a little bit of grit and determination today by rebounding from a double bogey, bogey start on the first two holes to record four birdies over the next six holes, and then par the final 10 holes to hold off three other golfers that finished one shot back, including playing partner Brad Hopfinger of Iowa.
Sophomore Mitchell Sutton had his best finish of the fall with a tie for fifth, equaling his best result at the college level. He overcame two early bogeys on his round today with four birdies in the final 10 holes to shoot 1-under 71 on Monday. The London, Ontario, native wound up with a 3-under 213 score for the tournament.
The steady play of senior Brandon Detweiler continued in Monday’s final round with an even-par 72 and a 54-hole of score of even-par 216 to finish tied for 13th.
Junior Chad Day placed in a tie for 20th after a 3-over 75. The Raleigh, N.C., product finished at 2-over 218 for the tournament.
Junior Mark McMillen had his best showing of the invitational by firing a 1-over 73 to finish tied for 52nd at 10-over 226.
Junior Graham Baillargeon shot an 83 to finish 65th at 23-over 239, while playing as an individual.
Today capped an incredible run of success for the program over the last month. In four fall tournaments, NC State won The Invitational at Kiawah to begin the season, and just last week won its own Wolfpack Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Toss in a pair of runner-up finishes – both to Iowa - at the Golfweek Conference Challenge and today at Duke and the Wolfpack was either in the lead or in second after every day of competition this fall.
The Pack entered the Rod Myers Invitational with the second-lowest scoring average in the nation. With today’s finish they certainly didn’t lose any ground among the country's elite clubs.
The Wolfpack will start the spring portion of its schedule at the Puerto Rico Classic in February.
