RALEIGH, N.C. – Former NC State linebacker, assistant coach and head football coach Chuck Amato recently began chemotherapy treatments for throat cancer. Wolfpack fans can send the coach, who helped win its first bowl game as a player in 1967 and four bowl victories as a head coach, well wishes from this GoPack.com link.
Amato was recruited by legendary head coach Earle Edwards to follow in his older brother Rosie Amato's footsteps to play for the Wolfpack and was the originator of the famed "White Shoes Defense" during his senior season of 1967. He was an assistant coach under Lou Holtz and Bo Rein during the 1970s and was a long-time assistant under Bobby Bowden at Florida State. He returned to NC State as head coach from 2000-2006.
Amato, who returned to Florida State after the Wolfpack, currently resides in Tallahassee, Fla., with his wife.
