Four members of the Wolfpack football squad have been invited to attend NC State’s 2010 Freshman Honors Convocation on January 25. This event recognizes first-year African American, Native American and Hispanic students who achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in their first semester.
Freshman linebacker Hans Rice, defensive end Darryl Cato-Bishop, and defensive backs Dean Haynes and Jesse Riley will all be honored. Rice posted a 3.0 GPA in computer engineering during the fall semester, while Riley earned a 3.0 in business. Haynes and Cato-Bishop are both enrolled in the first-year college program and earned GPAs of 3.123 and 3.0 respectively.
"These young men personify what it means to be champions in the classroom," said head football coach Tom O'Brien. "The first semester in college for a student-athlete is not easy, but they excelled."
Rice, Cato-Bishop and Haynes redshirted the 2009 campaign, while Riley saw action in eight games on the Wolfpack special teams.
Other NC State student-athletes who will be honored at the event are Ryanna Henderson, a middle distance runner on the track and field squad (3.822 in first year college), Benjamin Major , a sprinter with the men’s track and field team (3.178 in education) and Breanna Andrews, a shortstop on the softball squad (3.188 in first year college).
